In 1961, Albert Pinelo moved to the United States from Cuba with dreams of making a name for himself. Now almost 48 years later Pinelo has done more than that. Pinelo, a retired political science professor, began teaching at Northern Kentucky University in 1972. He was recently awarded the title of emeritus professor.

Lowering bar on Florida’s teachers’ ESOL is a bad idea – A quarter-million Florida kids are learning English for the first time. In South Florida, it’s about one in seven children. Under state rules, they’re expected to master the language in two years and pass the FCAT.
