Here in Las Vegas, according to this year’s Las Vegas Perspective, the Hispanic population is at 26-percent. But that number is growing every day. Assemblyman Bob Beers, R-Henderson, has requested a bill to punish employers who knowingly hire undocumented immigrants, and Assemblyman Ty Cobb, R-Reno, has asked for a bill that would prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving most kinds of state assistance and from getting Nevada driver’s licenses.”*

The struggles of Latino families in America are the focus of a new movie premiering this week at the CineVegas Film Festival. A UNLV professor says he made the film to open the public’s eyes about what life is like for immigrants once they come to the U.S.

The movie is called “Primo” — in English that means cousin. It’s about three cousins who were separated as children during the civil war in El Salvador. Their journey through life brings them here to Las Vegas.”*

Last year, CineVegas introduced a new section of the festival to highlight the next wave of Mexican filmmakers and to introduce their films to American audiences. Called La Proxima Ola, it showcased first- and second-time filmmakers — some internationally known as actors — who represent the future of Mexican film.

Films featured last year included the U.S. premiere of “Bad Habits” (“Malos Habitos”), which received La Proxima Ola Jury Prize. Other films included “Chavez,” a documentary about Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna; “Drama/Mex”; “Never on a Sunday” (“Morirse en Domingo”); and the U.S. premiere of “Once Upon a Time Maria” (“Eros una vez Maria”).”*

This summer, Latino artists, comedians and entertainers are in the spotlight in the country’s top travel destination: Las Vegas. The Grammy-nominated Mexican trio’s third single, Todo Cambió, recently reached the #1 spot of Mexico’s Top 100 Singles Chart.

The Strip is already preparing for Mexican Independence Day. Already lined up for the weekend, September 12-15, at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is Luis Miguel. Leading Latin Pop Star Alejandro Fernández brings his new tour “VIENTO A FAVOR” to the Mandalay Bay Events Center Monday, Sept. 15. Tickets for Fernández are on sale now, while Miguel’s are on sale June 7.

A pair of uncombed, college-aged Mexican pop singers tonight will usher in the first attempt by a national environmental organization to target Nevada’s Hispanics.

A free concert by Latin Grammy winners Jesse and Joy at the Rio is the hook for la onda verde, or “green wave,” a campaign being launched here by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The idea is to draw a few thousand Hispanics to listen to the wispy duo’s harmonies and then persuade the crowd to dash off notes to Gov. Jim Gibbons protesting three coal power plants planned for rural Nevada.”*

More than a hundred demonstrators marched more than three miles from Valley High School to the UNLV Alumni Amphitheater May 23, in support of the DREAM Act – proposed legislation to grant undocumented students a path to citizenship through higher education or military service.

The demonstration, organized by UNLV’s MEChA chapter – a national Chicano student organization, along with the United Coalition for Immigrant Rights, included community supporters, UNLV students and high schoolers around the city.”*

Jesse Gutierrez, executive director of Reno-based Nevada Hispanic Services, said the agency’s board of directors will write a position paper, which is expected to be released later in the year, on immigration issues and arrests. He said the board wants to formalize its positions because such issues are ongoing and the agency often is asked about its official stance.

In September, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 54 people at 11 area McDonald’s restaurants and two elsewhere. At the time, ICE agents said the raids were part of an effort “to focus on employers who build in hiring illegal workers as part of their business practice.”"*

Initially, Salsa began as a form of dance among African slaves in Cuba during the Colonial period.
